1.Relax

It may seem silly, but when it comes to painting, your frame of mind is everything. We suggest letting go of any stress, mental to-do lists and reservations and leave them at the door. Once you’re relaxed…it’s time for the next step.

2.Put it in Perspective

When moving from one part of your painting to the next, always take a few moments to look at the big picture and take account the space left on your canvas. Envision the entire painting and how it should look at the end while you’re working on individual components. This will help bring the whole scene together!

3.Take Your Time

Comparison is the root of all grief. Don’t worry if others are picking it up faster, or if you’re moving quicker than others are! It’s all a process–and you can always add to your painting at the end!

4.It’s All in the Lines

Outlines and shading are what give a painting depth and texture. Play with dark shadows and adding in a lighter component when you feel that a subject could use a little more “something” but you’re not sure what that is. You’ll be amazed what one extra layer of shading will do!

5.Take Risks

No artist ever became an art icon by playing it safe. Don’t be afraid to take risks in your paintings!
